More guests!

This must have been the weekend for MTN guests.  Lenn left Saturday morning and Frank & Gail arrived from North Carolina early Saturday evening.

IMG_4221 This fun couple stayed both Saturday and Sunday nights with us which was nice so we could get to know each other a little more.  We went to church Sunday morning then mid-afternoon we went riding together and out for supper.

Frank & Gail have been married 48 years!  They left this morning heading to the west coast and all points in between.  They plan on being on the road for 5-1/2 weeks!  How fun would that be?  But then again, I’m not sure DH & I could be in that close of quarters for that long.  :)

Safe travels and marital bliss to you both! :)

One gutzy lady

We had another MTN visitor Friday night.  We thought we were having a man as a visitor since the name was Lenn.  Well, when Lenn called the night before she arrived to confirm, Lenn had the sweetest southern female voice I’ve heard!  Not that it mattered any but you know how it is when you expect something and find it’s something else?  I was just a little surprised.
IMG_4194 Well, Ms. Lenn is one gutzy lady.  She will be on the road by herself for the next 3-1/2 weeks on her BMW motorcycle.  I don’t  like to travel far alone as a woman by myself in a car let alone on a motorcycle.  Then add in the fact that she is staying in peoples home she doesn’t know other than that they are members of MTN.  All this equals one gutzy lady in my book.
IMG_4195 She left our house on Saturday morning headed for Minneapolis that night and on through the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana from there.IMG_4210Here she is crossing the Mississippi River on that nasty Savanna-Sabula bridge :/

Happy riding and safe travels Lenn!

Where the Magic happens…

Someone walked into my office the other day and commented about it being where the magic happens (hence the title).  I’m not so sure about magic but it is where I seem to spend alot of time.   Especially this time of year as we started classes on Monday which seems a week too early to me but hey, they don’t ask me when they set the college calendar.   IMG_4177

Why do I have some of the things in my office that I do you ask?  You did ask didn’t you?  Either you did or I’m hearing voices again. :(  Dang those voices anyway!

Why do I have a sweater on the back of my chair, a fan on my desk and a heater under my desk?  There go those voices asking questions again.   The heater is almost always on in the winter as my office gets really cold in the winter time.  There is an outside door not far away and I get a nasty draft every time it’s opened and closed.  In the summer, it ranges from hot and sticky to freezing cold so sometimes the heater is on in the summer as well.  Usually right after I turn the fan off.  Our building seems to have trouble keeping the heating and cooling regulated.  Then throw in a personal hot flash or two and I’m temperature challenged to say the least.

I also have my very own personal refrigerator.  We have a community refrigerator in our building lounge but I’ve had food come up missing more than once.  If it’s not tied down it’s gone.  So I bought my own frig and put it under my desk, darn it!  but, keep that on the QT as we’re not really supposed to do that.

I also believe in personalizing my space, hence the family pictures and the flame panel and motorcycle tank(both gifts from auto body son).

See that basket at the forefront of the picture.  Take a good look at it as it’s as empty as it’s been  in the last few weeks.  I’m convinced when I come in Monday though that the papers will have had paper sex over the weekend and multiplied.

The picture below is one of the best parts of my job.  See that other desk?  That belongs to my very own student worker who I get to boss around have assist me. She’s only with me 10-15 hours a week but that's a lot of hours of grunt meaningful work I can throw place gently in her capable hands.  In all honesty, over the past twelve years I’ve been blessed with some very nice young ladies who we’re able to coerce into are willing to do just about anything we ask them to do from basic office tasks to cleaning the kitchen or even painting.  IMG_4178

I’ve really have it pretty good here.  I work in a relaxed atmosphere with great people, get Fridays off in the summer, have a wonderful boss, am afforded a great deal of schedule flexibility and can manage my office and the division how I see fit for the most part.

Then tell me this…why am I feeling so restless and like I need a change?  Is it just too long in the same spot?  Is there not enough challenge anymore?   Am I frustrated with life in general? is it a mid-life crisis?  or is it God putting a stirring in my heart to shift things in a different direction?  I’ve been sorting through this for some time now and I still don’t get it.  When and if I ever figure it all out…y’all will be some of the first to know.  :)

happy birthday Heidi!

Our daughter-in-law, Heidi’s birthday is today.  I never have to wonder what Heidi would like for her birthday as she’s usually pretty explicit about what she wants.  It sort of kills the element of surprise but also eliminates the guesswork.

They bought an old piano at her grandmothers household auction a couple of months ago and she wanted a runner for the top of it.  This is what I came up with.

IMG_4171It photographed lighter than it really is.  It’s mainly mustards, deep reds, browns and greens which all go well in their home.

I took this over last night with a pan of scotcheroos.  I’m not sure which she liked more.  :)   Scotcheroos are pretty darned good!

Happy Birthday Heidi!

Enjoy your day!

Early August walk-about

I took a quick walk around the yard tonight.  I’m placing an emphasis on quick as it’s 8 pm and still so stinkin’ hot, humid and buggy, I didn’t dally too long.  Slather yourself in bug spray and come on along!

IMG_4118

My droopy hydrangeas.  I don’t think they like the heat either.

 IMG_4123

I made new cushions and pillows for the porch furniture over the weekend.  I like how it brightened things up.

IMG_4104

Lovin’ the lime green sweet potato vine.  It’s one of my favorites along with the King Tut grass below.

IMG_4106

We seem to have an overabundance of grasshoppers this year.  They’ve always creeped me out!  As a kid I remember riding my bicycle down a gravel road and they were hopping everywhere around me.  Scarred me for life I tell ya!

IMG_4108

Between the grasshoppers, our population explosion of mosquitoes and some weird black moths I’ve never seen before, it’s a plague, I say, a plague! IMG_4113 IMG_4114 IMG_4115

The sedum isn’t quite blooming yet.  I can’t wait for the explosion of color that comes from this plant.  And from a plant that I haven’t managed to kill off in all these years.  You can’t beat that!  Hardy little buggers they are! IMG_4117

Hope you enjoyed your walkabout with me.  We’ll do it again next month.

August sky – Take #2

Completely different look from yesterday morning.  IMG_4138 IMG_4140

IMG_4139

Nice and cool out this morning which is a far cry from the heat of yesterday and the same heat expected again today.  It looks like we might get a little rain so that’s probably why the cool breeze.

EDITED:  45 minutes later, I was getting ready for work and DH yelled to come look – check this out – a complete double rainbow!  I don’t remember the last time I saw a full rainbow, let alone a double! IMG_4145 IMG_4149

August sky

You’re all probably getting tired of my sky pictures but I love taking pictures of sunrises and sunsets and the beauty and colors God throws our way through them.

This mornings sky was exceptional.  As the sun was coming up, the living room was literally cast with an orange glow.  We had a little fog to go along with the sunrise to make it even more mysterious.

So much lighter out but the fog was still hanging in the bottom of the field.

Baby “W” quilt

A while back I mentioned I was working on some projects I couldn’t show yet as they were gifts.  This quilt was one of them.

This is for a great young couple in our church who are expecting their first child, a boy in early September.  The shower was on Saturday.

I had a hard time getting a decent picture of it.  The colors look so washed out.

IMG_4094

I prefer a not so plain quilt back.  I had a leftover square from the front so added that to the back to brighten it up.  I quilted it myself which I haven’t done much of so I used straight line and outline quilting and left it at that.  I actually kind of like it.  It’s not so stiff like quilts can get with a lot of quilting.

IMG_4092

This was my first attempt at a computer printed label.  Hopefully it will last and not wash out right away.

The red fabric was cute but the stripe was my favorite and the best part was I found it in my stash!

He’s 29? How did that happen?

Our first born son, our oldest child is a year older today, or more specifically at 7:10 pm today is 29 years old!  How did that happen?
Lucas Daniel weighed in at 8 lbs. 10-1/2 ounces and altered our world forever with his arrival.  The summer I was pregnant with Luke was one of the hottest summers I can remember or maybe  it just seemed that way as I felt big as a barn most of the summer.   Luke didn’t hurry into this world.  He was three weeks late in arriving and still is a pretty laid back kind of guy.

He was such a happy baby.  He slept through the night at 2 months old.  I remember his first ear infection very well.  He woke up screaming in the middle of the night at 5 months old and I didn’t quite know what to do with him as we hadn’t experienced that yet.  It scared us all to pieces.
This little guy was interested in tractors and machines from the time he could crawl and knew what he wanted.  He was constantly on the floor or in the sandbox “farming”.  And if he wasn’t farming he would sit for hours reading his Dad’s Prairie Farmer magazine.  Instead of stuffed animals he would take his toy tractors to bed with him at night.

Some things never change.  He may be older and married now but he’s still our “farm kid.”  He works his tail off as a service technician for an agricultural sprayer company and farms during off time with his Minneapolis Moline tractors.
Luke is a hard working, easy going, funny, likeable guy that we couldn’t be prouder of.

Happy 29th Luke!  We love you!

Ouch!

Remember a few weeks back when DH stepped in a grass covered hole into the unknown?

MRI results showed an ACL tear which the doctor said they don’t fix “at his age”.  Now, isn’t that a way to make a patient feel better?  He’s not 80 for goodness sake!

He also had two tears in his meniscus which were then taken care of this past Friday morning.  He came through surgery well, put in an incredibly rough night Friday night, hobbled around on crutches and did a lot of this over the weekend

IMG_4082
(and no, those aren’t my hairy, white legs.  They belong to DH.  He did the ol’ icepack treatment most of the weekend)

and was back on the motorcycle tonight!  Like they say, you just can’t keep a ornery good man down!

He’s doing much better much quicker than I or he ever expected.
