Being resourceful

When you live in the country and the power is out, sometimes one has to be resourceful.
Last night our area received 6 - 8 inches of rain between 11pm & 9am this morning.  We woke to no electricity this morning.  I was ever so thankful that today is my day off and I didn’t have to get ready for work.  However, I still needed to get a few morning “chores” accomplished.

Face and hair washing.  I was also very thankful for a nice warm rain.IMG_4015 DH catching water to flush the toilet.  When the power is out we have no pump to pump water from the well.  At least we could pour a bucketful in.  Not ideal but it works!

IMG_4019 We do have a gas stove, so could light that and make breakfast.  We opened the fridge really fast as to not let the cold out since we didn’t know how long we would be out and it was supposed to be in the 90’s today.  We boiled water to make coffee and I fried up some eggs but DH decided he wanted toast as well.  Hmmm…no electric toaster either.  He was resourceful and grabbed a marshmallow fork from the closet.

Our electricity was only off 3 hours so we were lucky.  It could have been all day like some other areas around us.

This is what the aftermath of all that rain looked like.  Beautiful!  We really needed the rain but maybe not quite so much at one time and it sounds like more thunderstorms and heavy rains are on the way tonight.

I just may be washing my hair in the rain again tomorrow morning.

  1. Every time we start having a thunderstorm Hubby starts running water in the bathtub just in case we need it. Bet the rainwater was nice for hair washing!

  2. I don't mind the electricity being off so much if I don't have to do anywhere or if it's hot. It's always hot here though. I'm glad it was only 3 hours for you.

  4. Roughing it def has it challenges. After last year's storm, we were w/o power for 10 days. ugh! That was crazy. Glad your outage was only a few hours. Have a great weekend. Blessings, SusanD

  5. love the hairwashing shot. Glad the rain kept up til the shampoo was out. Most of our neighbors have the mucho expensive generators wired into the house system. We went the cheap route and got the $450 one at menards. It has 220 so we can run the well pump and the electric stove. Dave has even used the dryer. Surely beats hanging wet jeans from clothesline strung between teh ceiling beams in December.

    Love the resourcefulness.

  6. I always love when you post pictures of the countryside around your home. It is so beautiful! Hope you don't lose your power again. We take so much for granted, don't we? Love & blessings from NC!

  9. I loved your resourcefulness and the photos. I have never showered in the rain, but I was seven before our home had an indoor toilet, a built in bathtub and running water you could drink from the faucet. Before that, we drank our water from a metal ladle dipped into a water filled bucket from the neighbor's outdoor faucet. Before we had an actual sink, we filled a big galvanized tub of water for baths, with everyone using the same water, and when we did finally get a sink, the water was pumped up from our cystern, but all our water was heated in a big copper oval shaped kettle on a gas stove in our basement, then carried to where it was needed. Rain water was collected in big containers sat in the yard. I remember those days, and those days just make me more thankful for what we have, and how we live today, but I know that those days have made me who I am today, and I know that those days have made me a survivor, if I had to be. Somehow, I sense you had 'hands on' experience too.
    Be blessed....Michelle

  10. Our power went out the other day in the middle of the day for no apparent reason. Maybe just the heat and the grid was on overload? We're reminded pretty quickly how much we rely on it though.

Glad you're all okay...that was some rain in your area. I saw the flooding on the news.

  11. We usually only loose power during the cold winters and thankfully have generators to keep the house warm.
We've gathered water from the gutters too....gotta potty once in awhile!
